Planning the Laundry Room

So now we are finally in our "forever home" we've made the first step to making it truly ours by completing the Living Room - the whole house is a project and the kitchen terrifies me so next on my list is the Utility Room - we have this small cluttered room with the washing machine in it - a space for a tumble dryer and a sink (I'd love to replace it with a belfast sink!)

So I've got my thinking cap on (or rather pinterest open!) to gather some inspiration and thoughts. With a very active busy family life, I have to get the utility room spot on - it needs to have space for drying clothes - I have a number of pieces that can't be tumbled and I also like to consider the environment.  Although we are currently without a tumble dryer - I'm hoping to squeeze one in somewhere!
And I need to be able to store things such as the ironing board, vacuums cleaner and steam mop.
The boiler cupboard is in this space so I have to consider working around that and the door to the back garden is in here so it's going to have a mudroom edge to it!

Most of all, it needs to look fantastic - I have this thing with floors so I really want a stunning floor too - did I say it's a small room? my expectations may need to come back down to earth a little bit!

I'm starting with a look at the basics...

Laundry Baskets
Being a working family home, I think it's important to have plenty of laundry baskets handy so I'm planning on installing one in each bedroom as well as one in the bathroom. We currently have one super huge laundry hamper on the upstairs landing between us all and it's always overflowing no matter how often our washing machine is running! (hmmmm would it be wrong to have two washing machines!!!)

I love the idea of a bench with baskets below, such as this White Storage Bench  £160 from http://www.thewhitelighthousefurniture.co.uk to use in the bathroom - the baskets are so handy to just pull out and carry down to the utility room.

For the master bedroom, I'd love something neat such as the Mala rattan drum hamper £199 from http://www.artisanti.com

Or I'd love something more unusual such as the elevated apple crate stool (with the most beautiful fabric cushion cover choices - I couldn't decide which one was my favourite) £140 from http://tiffanyjayne.co.uk

The children should have something fun as well as functional in their rooms and I love bright colours and animals for them:

Maegan's favourite animals are giraffes so I know she would love this beautiful lidded giraffe basket £75 from http://sistersguild.co.uk

Whist I know Blake would prefer the King of the jungle to guard his socks! £30 from

Drying Racks
Our utility room is a small space so I love the idea of these laundry ladders from https://www.juluhome.co.uk starting from £175 they come in a choice of sizes and colours and you can buy additional brackets so you can move the ladder to another room or outdoors.

Finishing touches
Of course my utility room will just have to have some pretty details! I absolutely adore apothecary jars to fill with laundry items such as these ones £18 from https://www.montysvintageshop.co.uk

The print on this small washing bag is just great isn't it! £8 from http://www.tch.net

Our Living Room Makeover Big Reveal

When I was approached by B&Q to work with their new spring/summer collection at first I thought I could use a few accents to freshen up a room but then it occurred to me that this would be a great opportunity to do a complete room overhaul! We've moved into our "forever home" but yet to decorate - it's different when children are involved - it takes a lot of careful planning, you can't just delve in and go for it!

Our living room started off magnolia, but dirty and scuffed with lots of small holes in the walls from the previous owner and lighting that was very much not my taste or style - complete with gold switch covers and frilly curtain pelmets - a long way from a cosy relaxing space.

After we had decided to absolutely go for it with a complete room overhaul (on a budget of £250) we needed to talk colour!
I really fell for the Lars Contzen Colour Courage collection of premium mat emulsion paints, 60 shades all exclusive to B&Q - I fancied a strong blue or period green but hubby didn't so it took a while to agree on one! This is the selection stocked in the Siducp branch, it isn't the full collection but its enough to give you a glimpse of these beautiful shades - each one has a story behind it.

Work in progress meant we needed to do this room in stages around the children and the inevitable hiccups (school half term, one child with an ear infection needing antibiotics and an unexpected gas leak to name a few!)

We settled on COZY ATMOSPHERE  a pastel, warm shade of mauve brown that creates a homely feeling. Lars Contzen tells the story of how the atmosphere of cafes and bars inspired this shade, and its name is exactly what we wanted to create! The colour takes on a whole different look and feel depending on how much light and shadow there is. I've showcased the look in both daylight and fire lit evening.

We rearranged the furniture and it felt great adding in our own items, it felt like we were actually moving in! The room feels completely different.
Our elephants look at home next to the fireplace, My angle poise sits neatly on the bookcase, I love the mid century bureau that belong to my husband's grandfather sitting in the alcove and we hung Louis Armstrong painted by our talented artist friend Melissa O'Brien above the sofa!

We fitted two shelves in one of the alcoves - we chose Form floating shelves in Oak veneer from B&Q which were the perfect fit for the space.
We mounted a photograph underneath two Melody side lights from B&Q
We used oak wood finish photo frames from B&Q's colours collection to showcase A4 size black and white prints of the children, We mounted 2 underneath the Melody side lights and a gallery of 4 above the TV - with a single spitfire image taken by my husband housed on the shelves. These frames are on a 2 or £10 offer.
I added a decorative LED filament bulb to Bulyon dome light pendant in the centre of the room.
The black lantern is from the new Kasbar collection
The butterfly and dragonfly candles are a part of the Meadow rage.
I selected 2 woven stripe cushions and 2 Elephant cushions from the Kasbar collection to finish the sofas.
The wicker basket will become the home to a house plant.
I just love the metal "Life is a great adventure" sign.

Sleeping on Silk - Silk Mattress Topper from Silk Bedding Direct

I received a Silk Mattress Topper from Silk Bedding Direct and wanted to share my thoughts with you.

I'm very particular when it comes to bedding - it's an area I'm willing to spend money on, I love luxury bedding.

Silk Bedding Direct has this to say about their toppers:
"As with our silk duvets, luxurious 100% natural and hypoallergenic long-strand mulberry silk is hand-stretched into the mattress topper casing.

Our special production method ensures that the insulating layers of air between the fine silk threads are kept in place properly without crushing or damaging the silk.

Using this method creates a more comfortable, luxurious and higher quality silk-filled mattress topper."

I loved that the mattress topper comes in it's own storage bag, anything with handy storage is great or me, I have a large ottoman in our bedroom for spare bedding so these bags are super - the right size to fit.

The Silk Mattress topper has hand sewn flower patterns to help keep the silk in place without crushing it. The corners of the topper have thick, strong elastic bands to hold the topper in place.

As it's silk, I was hesitant to press it, apologies for the crinkles! Although they did smooth out a bit!

In our house we have many allergy sufferers and asthmatics so I really appreciate that the natural silk filling is hypo allergenic, its also free from dust mites too as they cannot survive in silk.

The mattress topper helps to regulate your temperature which is great in any season, but particularly handy now the room temperature drops in the night times.

" The interior is 100% pure, natural and hypoallergenic mulberry silk and nothing else. Because it is 100% natural and untreated the silk is rich in the amino acids that are so good for our skin and hair, keeping our skin young and our hair naturally nourished." You can read more on the website about the benefits of silk bedding.

Overall, I'd recommend Silk Bedding Direct, I'm very pleased with the mattress topper.
